| Looks like classic Lupine poisoning to me. Toxic to sheep and cattle. It affect the fetus, by not turning in the womb. Witch in turn causes deformed legs, spines, etc. They don't have to eat very much of it, but at the right time of gestation 40-90 days if I recall. Most all western universities and ARS research facilities have done lots of studies on this and have published data on this.
Biggest thing you can do if Lupine in pastures is to not overgraze and keep cattle of a good mineral package for your area long before going into those pastures. My opinion is cattle that are lacking in good mineral levels going into those pastures seek out plants like this. Some even develop a taste to it, seem to be a little repete offenders to it.
I try and rotate pastures with Lupine to very late grazing or early before 40 days of gestation. Real key is to not overgraze. | |
