Central Kansas | The pic below (I hope) was taken this past weekend here in Central, Ks....very NE corner of Rice Co. Trees were found in a low swampy area and leaves are just as shown.....still green. Many of the berries have been eaten I suspect, but their placement on the stem can be seen. The red berries contain 4 little nutlets that have narrow grooves on their sides. I have always called this tree Serviceberry holly but a friend from NE Oklahoma was here this weekend and he called this Possumhaw...Swamp Holly or Winterberry. None of the descriptions fit exactly to any of these. Pretty odd tree for these parts and really loaded this year.
I e-mailed photos to the Forestry Service at KSU but have not heard back from them so am asking if any of you chaps have an idea. The largest tree would be about 10' tall, grows in shade and where there is ample ground water (spring's edge).
