Subject: Fertilizerguy- pH levels?

NE SD

You seem like you are very knowledgeable with looking at these numbers. We have some areas in some fields that have high pH levels. These spots are what we call Alkaline holes and seem that they have increased in size over time. I get tired of looking at these un-productive white patches and we are ready to rid ourselves of them. Like Paul said below, noone here really pays any attention to any numbers other than you're standard N and P. A lot of times K is not even paid attention to. That's a whole other argument we'll save for another day, but right now I'm interested in learning about correcting pH levels. Now, the "Hefty Boys" said Sunday morning that lime is to be used for correcting low pH, but the only real way to improve high pH is to improve drainage and to deep rip the ground.

The problem we run into, is that we are so flat in most of the areas that actually tiling these spots out is not feasable. We've never really done any running experiments as to how deep ripping helps improve these areas, but maybe it is worth the time and cost. What are your thoughts on this subject and are there "snake oils" that have a prayer at correcting it?
