Subject: Barley Farming

Riviersonderend South Africa
I am a Soth African barley farmer ,we are busy harvesting and we are having a good season so far .We windrow all our crops due to the lot of wind during the summer, this year we had about 30 mm of rain over a weeks period on the barley windrows ,when we started harvesting pre germination and germination was found in the barley samples taken at the silos, none of above must be there to get a malting barley grading
The barley are down graded to feed barley at half the price .

The grading method they use are one kilogram off barley is taken from the sample put on a glas table and they search for germination in one kernel is found it is down graded.

The plumpness of the barley is abou 80 -90 % and is off a good quality
Barley farmers in Canada who also windrow ,what are your experience with senarios like this.

The problem is that we have only on e buyer of malting barley ,South African Breweries and they call the shots ,they want a world class barley which a can understand ,but mother nature plays the biggest part in farming

Find attached some photos i took yesterday

Greetings
