Subject: The power of water

Saturday night's storms not only produced a lot of tornadoes and hail, they delivered heavy, pounding rain on into Sunday morning. . I had stayed up until well after 2 am watching the radar to see if any tornado warnings would be issued closer. Seeing no reason for further concern, I finally went to bed and slept soundly. It wasn't until Sunday evening that it was noticed a fair amount of gravel and large rock had been washed away from the front driveway entrance and culvert. The debris left behind suggests a raging torrent of water at least three feet high over the end of the driveway. It's going to take some labor to reclaim what was washed into the ditch and put it back.

A nearby county road runs across a hill. Erosion has long been a problem in the ditches paralleling that road because of the speed of water running downhill. The county filled the ditches with loads of large rocks and packed them in place within the last few years. During Saturday night's heavy rainfall, those rocks were mostly washed out of the ditches and onto the road along with bricks and logs and limbs. It's not surprising how that same road needs to be repaired and resurfaced every year.
