Subject: Hay shortage in South?

Fitchburg,WI
I saw a clip on CBS news last night about horses starving and people setting them loose in parks etc. Heard from a trucker in NC last week at local auctions couldn't get a bid on horses for sale. How widespread is this hay shortage, or is it just something that is sensationalized in the media? We sold hay to NC, Tenn. and southern Ind. last year cause we had a surplus in our area. It seemed strange that there wasn't something available closer to home and save 4 to 5$ per bale trucking costs. How is it that horse owners down south can afford 10-12$ hay and up here they bitch if prices go above $3 ? We are looking at putting up more of our hay in large squares this year to cut down on some of the labor and fuel costs. Very few stables around here will feed large squares, so that's something that has to change or it's going South on the Interstate!
