Subject: Calving season

Enjoy the discussions about the “right” time to calve. Very close to the halfway mark here. A 1/3 of our bulls go out may 1 and 2/3 June 15. First calf feb 2, hopefully done first week of June. We came to this strategy as a way to stretch labor and facilities as our herd grew. We farm too, so trying to avoid full out calving overlapping with seeding. For a change, other than an early March storm the weather so far has been as good as you could hope for.

While this system works, it sure feels like a long season. Bad snow storms in early April are common and create a massive amount of work and yardage. We’ve been discussing moving the winter group to join the spring group and not putting bulls in until July 1. This would still get the majority of calves on the ground before cows go to grass in early June.

This would be a big change for us. Anybody shift their calving season and regret it?
