Subject: Electrical ground for surgery?

Didn't get to ask the lady hooking up a ground wire to one of my legs what that was for exactly. Told her it reminded me of grounding airplanes when refueling them with a fuel truck.

The surgeon did later use something to cauterize tissue. Could the ground cable have been for a medical laser? I woke up while under anesthesia and heard a sound and the smell of flesh burning. I asked the surgeon if that was skin being cauterized and he replied with a yes.
