They are cancelling flights into the region because the airlines don't want to have airplanes stuck on the ground.  If they keep them out of here, they can keep them flying for a day or so, until these airports get opened up and back into business. 

Frankly, I don't blame them.   It doesn't really pay to have those planes stranded on the ground, when, with a little planning, they can keep them flying elsewhere.
