Milford, IL | Blue collar jobs were everywhere here until NAFTA, some survived another decade or so after NAFTA.
UARCO, Lifetime Door, Howard Industries, Vermillion Iron, Stokleys, Schumacher, Joan of Arc, FMC, others Im forgetting, all gone. 1000's of jobs in a ten mile radius from my hometown.
Maybe Southern IL was different. I'll agree farm consolidation was a factor but most certainly not the biggest factor here. Cost of hiring relative to other states and countries and proximity to shipping lanes has hurt this area economically. | |
