SE Iowa | 20000 plants/acre can yield 200bu/acre. Have to plant flex hybrids to achieve that. Saw this a lot back in the 70-80's on 38 inch rows and before fungicide, high pops etc. Just needed good timely rains, good fertlity, and flex. Hybrids could not take heat/dry then. Now there are very few true flex hybrids, just semi flex or no flex so high pops are required along with fungicide to keep the corn standing. Planted longer maturity then, 120 day versus 112-14 now so corn needed more drying. Here you do not need 1 lb of N to get 10 bu of corn. 160 lbs N on soy ground at 30000 pop. can get you to 240-50 with good weather. | |
