Find a dog pound and get a loveable mutt. There's lots of great dogs at about any animal shelter.  Just have to find the right one.

Every dog I've ever had in my life was a pound puppy/ or dog. Or somebody who didn't want theirs any more.  I've never had a bad dog yet.
