John Smith- "Hardy Board" is a slight misspelling of Hardie- a brand of fiber cement siding. Excellent stuff- looks as good as or better than cedar. Can be purchased prefinished. Holds paint longer than wood. Takes a bit more care in installation but well worth it. I cringed when I read that the OP was even thinking of going back in time to vinyl.
