Wisconsin | I'd say more likely a rat than a squirrel or racoon at 2AM. Squirrels aren't nocturnal that I know of, unless it was a flying squirrel which are extremely common, but not as noisy as a rat. If you heard joists and nails squeaking, then it was probably a racoon, but the ones I've seen going back home are close to dawn. Maybe they explore all night and only go home in the morning though?
Rats can get in a hole you have a hard time finding. Racoons will be obvious where they came in. Get a couple dog proof traps, bait with a marshmallow impaled on the trigger, another sitting on top of the trap, and another couple pieces at knee high for visual attraction. Keep the trap away from anything the racoon can reach because it will get destroyed. Don't use poison for a rat, it might die where you can't reach it. | |
