Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa

MaineFarmer - 3/26/2024 04:53 I know of a local farmer whom lost it all(yes all of it) to a casino that opened up nearby his farm. Was in the berry biz, very popular U pick.had a ton of $$ in July,,not much to do with it ,,sad .But as farmers we all gamble with the inputs and with that usually the entire farms existence.Of course there are many whom have insurance in the commodity farming biz.

Had a friend years ago who was deeded a 160 acre farm, typical Iowa corn/soybean, good production but not the very best, by an old couple who had no kids and thought a lot of this fella. Gave him the farm with a 3 bed/2 bath brick ranch style home built in the late 1960s.  He lost the whole kit n kaboodle in a poker game in the back room of an old tavern in town. I'd have killed him dead, but his wife stuck with him till he died of diabetes years later.
