It varies from state to state. In Kansas you have two options:
-They credit back your excess on a 1:1 ratio, but limited to a monthly basis. It used to be annually so excess generated in the winter could be used in the summer.
-They pay you at the rate it costs them to generate electricity which is somewhere well south of about 50% of what they charge you.
