That happened but it was the Knights Templar. They had a massive pile of wealth and loaned money to various monarchs and the King of France wanted it and he made the Pope put the Templar leadership on trial and it ended very poorly for them.
The Knights Templar were the soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon.
