Using a very safe product that’s not ABSOLUTELY safe, but doesn’t work to treat a disease is fine until you are the oddball that it’s not safe for or you mess up your self dosing and take too much and cause yourself harm. Then, you’ve damaged your health for no possible benefit in return.

Taking the same very safe drug for a condition that it works very well against changes the calculation entirely. There is measurable/demonstrable benefit to the population that far outweighs the tiny proportion of people that will have a serious adverse reaction to the very safe drug or product. If you’re one of the unlucky ones that gets sick, you or your family can at least say you had the odds in your favor!

Then there’s the folks that take the very safe but ineffective product that they very strongly believe works and do not take treatment that has been proven to work. Better hope for a condition or disease where a placebo effect has a good chance to improve one’s outcome!

The deal with COVID is most people are going to get over it just fine, so the “success” rate of anything you do or take is automatically very good…….until you actually do the statistics on it. Then, if properly conducted, a study can be done that accounts for confounding factors like age, preexisting conditions etc and you can have confidence in the results. Then repeat that study in many places across the world and you can have even more confidence.

This has been done with ivermectin to treat COVID and the results are in….DO NOT forgo an approved treatment if you have risk factors like age or serious preexisting conditions and instead rely on ivermectin. You won’t have scabies or intestinal worms after treatment with ivermectin, but it can only have a placebo effect if you believe it’s going to work against COVID.

For most people, a placebo effect or no effect is plenty good enough, they weren’t going to have a bad case of COVID anyway! For the ones who do wind up with a severe case, ivermectin or other “sugar pills” won’t be so good.

A great example of the placebo effect or maybe just misinformation is above where a poster claims ivermectin is a cure all for him. Problem is he takes an herbal supplement, Para 3, which is in not ivermectin at all. If it works for him great but claiming ivermectin is a wonder drug because you take an herbal supplement that a website touts as being similar to ivermectin, well what can you say.
