I assume you are posting this somewhat as a rhetorical question..?

Difference in ear size compared to how the crop looked early is an interesting assessment. Looks aren't everything, and early on I'd rather have the plant building a great root system than lots of above ground bio-mass that just looks pretty to our eyes. Maybe our favorite dark green color isn't as healthy as we'd like to think?

I'm going to go a different direction than other comments and say the difference is N use efficiency (which I guess is N deficiency depending how you look at it.) Oats is a reducing crop (and that field is no-till) so you've probably got more plant available Mang in the soil. The radishes accumulate S, which also helps N efficiency. Add some Moly and boron, with adequate Ca and you've got a recipe for incredible N use efficiency on that side of the fence.
