I’m curious too, but honestly change up the tillage some and it might just take care of itself.

Had a guy from NRCS come out with a penetrometer and poked a couple fields that I had just done some shallow disking and the occasional field cultivator and we didn’t have a real hard pan anywhere.

Now I’m not sure if it’s because my subsoil was pretty much saturated that he didn’t find a really bad hard pan or if it’s because I’ve never owned a chisel plow.

That being said I’m still curious about cover cropping but we face the issue of hard freeze during and after harvest, hard to get anything to grow then.
