As others said you can hurt your lawn by mowing to short. Grass needs to have some leaves left so that it can continue to grow.

Another problem is if grass gets real tall/overgrown and then you come in and cut more than 50% of the plant at one time. Grass will get to much of a stem in the bottom half of the plant then if you cut off all the leaves it takes awhile to get plant back growing.

If you let grass get to tall, try to only mow 20% off, wait 3-4 days mow another 20%, repeat, repeat, till you get desired height.

If putting down the whole 400lbs at once might be another problem, would be better off making multiple apps.

Grass also can't take heat very well. If you are in an area that has seen extensive heat with wind, it will brown it pretty fast.
