Madison Co. Virginia | We have the biennial thistles here; not the rhizome-spreading thistles. A year or two of seed suppression will almost eliminate them. Mow them when the first bit of pink is showing in the flowers. Any later, and quite a few will go to seed. Much earlier, and they'll just reflower closer to the ground where a mower can't reach them.
Cockleburs are the baddies here now. The only way to control them by mowing is to wait until they're full size and flowering in September. By then though, they've shaded out and killed the pasture grass stand in that area. If you mow earlier to save the grass, every one of the cocklebur plants will produce a little cluster of seeds two inches off the ground. | |
