You make a compelling point but You leave solar energy out of your calculations. Photosynthesis and solar energy play a big part in corn growth and (consequently) the bushels that enable this process.

As corn yields go up and the ethanol process slowly (very slowly) evolves to better efficiency, the carbon/fuel ratio improves in ethanols favor.

We also need to recognize the role that ethanol plays in air quality when used as an oxygenate in our fuel. That is more difficult to quantify. That was ethanols original role
