Cargill lays off 5% of its workforce, with job cuts impacting thousands of employees globally.
Minnesota-based Cargill did not immediately provide further specifics around the layoffs. But a 2024 annual report from the company noted that it had more than 160,000 employees worldwide, meaning the latest job cuts would be set to impact around 8,000 workers.
“As the world around us changes, we are committed to transforming even faster to deliver for our customers and fulfil our purpose of nourishing the world,” Cargill stated Tuesday. The company added that its workforce reductions are a result of a “difficult decision (that) was not made lightly.”
I'm not sure if Nutrien has "officially" announced their global intentions yet, but the people employed at my local Nutrien facility last day of work was yesterday. They were given a week notice (Merry Christmas).
The facility has rail service and Nutrien has spent a pile of money upgrading the facility the past couple years including a new dry fertilizer blender and new liquid fertilizer storage. They are not sure what they are going to do with the facility yet...Maybe a group of local farmers...or one local farmer can buy or lease the turn key facility? A lease would be better because a person would be buying a hazardous waste site.
The only local Nutrien employee left is my next door neighbor/facility manager who is now working from home as a salesperson. Nutrien has tasked him with selling us customers that Nutrien will be able service customer needs from their facility 35 miles (45 minutes) away...we'll see how it all goes. My thoughts are my 10 ton tender truck and 10 ton tender wagon will be upgraded to 25 ton semi trailer tender so I can travel 45 minutes to competitors facilities as well...Will that make me more efficient?
