me trying to get into the details of how rtk works.....

That's a big rabbit hole to go down since GNSS equipment has been refined over the years, along with different standards for satellite transmissions, and along with different ways to 'skin the cat' by OEM vendors (different methods for better accuracy). In regards to L1/L2

AI Overview - A GPS device uses information from both the L1 and L2 frequencies to calculate a more precise location by allowing for the correction of atmospheric effects like ionospheric delay, essentially providing a higher level of accuracy than using only the L1 signal alone; L1 is the primary civilian signal, while L2 provides additional data for improved calculations, especially in challenging environments like dense urban areas or under heavy foliage.

EZ-Guide 500, for instance, used L1 when locked along with inertial navigation ("Trimble Nav II NavController Interacts with your steering control system using internal sensors and GPS Data to correct roll, pitch and yaw") When L2 was unlocked (Omnistar XP/HP RTK), more correction info for atmospheric effects.

Both GPS L1/L2 provide info about atmospheric effects, but this correction information is based upon a number of CORs stations within US. If farming nearby one of these CORs Reference Stations, your L1/L2 atmospheric corrections will be better. See Pic below [3]
