Pittsburg, Kansas | That stuff was around (I had three young kids after all). I didn't say I ate it all the time.
I remember one thing I did was instead of eat a candy bar I would limit myself to one of those small bite size candy bars like they give out at Haloween. Not all the time. As a treat. I would check my blood sugar and as long as it stayed under 180 after meals I and my doctor was happy. A1c of 6.9-7.0 usually and both my doctor and a good nurse friend said If all their patients kept their blood sugar as good as I did their job would be much easier. My wife would make wonderful apple pies from our apple tree (with crust to die for). But she would use about 1/4 the normal amount of sugar in the recipe and our apples were a pretty tart variety (I am assuming not as high in sugar as some of the sweet varieties).
I basically ate everything but in "moderation" compared to what a non diabetic would eat. I severely limited added sugar and once I found out I was diabetic I took my two liter a day Dr Pepper additcion to Diet Dr Pepper (mixed it half and half for a week or two so I could stomach the diet pop).
Imagine what you want about me. I should have been a poster child for diabetic blood sugar control. All I did was get slightly sicker and sicker over 25 or 30 years.
Low carb fixed it. Full stop.
I don't expect anyone to believe me. I would not have believed me 7 years ago. I thought I was doing good and according to my doctor I was. I was essentially following conventional dietary and medical convention. Not perfectly but probably better than most diabertics.
Wife and I both got sick enough of being sick we determined to do something about it. Thank God we found doctors that actually knew what to do and listened to them. On line doctors. We have found a conventional doctor at home now that has no problem with our lifestyle (after our long term doctor retired and we had to find a new family doctor). He is a young guy and reads lots of research papers. An independent doctor not tied to any major medical institution nor beholden to them.
I will put a plug in for Dr David Unwin. He is a Brittish doctor and not one of the original ones I listened to. I only discovered him later in the journey. But a person could do much worse than listening to him for education about reversing diabetes. He is excellent. I don't listen to him much any more because most of his presentations are about the basics and I have heard that information many times now. But his message is excellent and easily understood. I would recomend him to anyone who wants to reverse their type II diabetes or eveen just lose weight.
