NW Illinois Stephenson county | The first time I had my soils grid mapped my fertilizer guy came out and asked me if there were any areas that had bad weed control. I told him I had 2 areas, one on a hill side and one in a bottom that giant foxtail could not be controlled. They were the areas that had very low ph. After liming the farm on variable rate those spots disappeared. On another 25 acre field a long slope grew good alfalfa, but then at the top of the hill it would thin out and yield a lot less. After liming both areas the hay yielded more , but the top of the hill was still less so I had 2 more tons of lime applied and it yielded excellent everywhere. A few years later I started applying Bio-Cal at 1000 lbs. per acre on the hay ground each year. Yields continued to climb, and the dandelions diminished in population considerably. The radiator screens were not plugged anymore after a couple rounds of the fields.
