Stephan, I'll post this past years data and then my chart of data over the years later on. Just got back last night from the WI Water and Soil Health 2 day conference so heading out soon for work.
Very positive results from corn on the long term replicated cover strips in 2024. It's all about management and the folks that claim 40-50 bpa losses some years? Those trials need a post mortem to see how many things were done wrong/went wrong and realistically needed eyes on them from someone experienced to see what was happening with crop response in-season.
It’s pretty easy to tell when the crop runs out of water. When you are carrying your crop on a few inches of rain like a couple years ago, and the rye cover used some of that moisture, and then you hit late season and crop just curls up, it’s no big mystery. If you can kill your cover crop very early it might be net positive, but if you do something like planting green far enough west I think on average you are going to be way behind. Also, I’m just talking about rye. |
