SC WI | I’ll add to what others say. There are many who subsidize farming, from government, to off farm income, to generational wealth(landownership). There are so many farms out there that compete against each other, that commodity prices stay relatively low(free market).
Government knows farmers will grow crops below COP, so the government would rather throw a bone once in a while than get directly involved with farming.
I believe Farmer wealth is being eroded by investor landowners.
As far as cheap food, farm products are a sliver of the input cost of a finished product. Most food cost are associated with transport, packaging, retailing. That’s why direct marketing farming can capture those margins and be sustainable for smaller operations.
ETA: Yes ethanol competes with food, but distillers are a useful feed byproduct.
