Until they get desperate to get rid of some kittens.   Then they'll call a farmer friend to see if they have appropriate shed for the cats to get into  to stay warm in cold weather.     Then they'll bring 3 or 4 to help with rodent control.    

I think pet shelters should have sign above the cage that lists all the expenses of adopting a pet.    Price of a year of dog food...  Purina vs Blue Buffalo,   The price of:   a kennel,  a fence, dog bed, toys and one yearly trip to the vet.    Also,  list disadvantages of:   can't go on a vacation unless you can take the dog,   Can't visit relatives an overnight trip away.   Some landlords won't allow pets.  Some landlords  charge a larger security deposit if you have pet.    Do you have the money to afford to "save"  your pet if they need major surgery?     They like to charge adoption fees to recoup expenses and to get someone who can afford a pet.  

I've got family that is visiting my home next week with a good sized dog.   I don't allow pets in my house.   The dog can stay in the garage,  tied up outside or spend the week penned in kennel, in our unfinished basement.    I feel for the dog.   To go outside this big dog will have to be on a leash since he has no idea where shelter is.   There are farm cats he might like to chase.    He belongs to a college student.   ( How does a college student afford a dog?)  How many times in the next few years will this dog have to move and get accustomed to another new place.
