interesting.. I have never figured out how to compact sand yet.. obviously I am doing something wrong


FWIW- Our farm is mostly lake bed soils. Clay loams, lower OM poorly drained. Most of our fields also have old sand bars in them. The sand will compact way worse than the clay loams. Our farm is on the edge of the Saginaw Valley, so more sand bars than some other areas of the valley.

When I build, we always strip back anything not sand and replace it with sand. Obviously has to be the right sand - but we do that to get compacted soils to build on.

Edit to add: our sands are definitely NOT our highest potential yielding soils. Glad we don't have more than we have. So- there obviously are some differences in sand too. Not the most profound thing to bring up I guess.
