Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | I purchased an older STX-450 on a retirement auction. This was my first experience with one. I needed to replace one of the bogie seals. My seed dealer has several Quads and agreed to help my Great Nephew change one of mine since he needed to do some on one of theirs and would have all the tools out.
He felt more comfortable with the CIH solution at that point so we went with genuine CIH parts. Unfortunately, the repair was not successful. Due to advice from Hill Farmer I went with the Quad Seal approach. My Great Nephew and I changed that one. I did purchase a couple of special tools from the Quad Seal Folks. Fortunately it has worked out fine and I haven't had the need to do anymore. So at the moment, the rig has one Quad Seal but all the others are still the seals that were on the tractor when I purchased it. It does have the Kyle clear covers on it which I think are a must if yours does not have them already.
If/when I do need to do more, I plan on going with the Quad Seal approach especially since I now have the tools. The advantage to the Quad Seal approach is that with the kit is is possible to use a very common seal as used in semi-trailers. It is also possible to "adjust" the preload on the bearings/seals rather than just slap them together and tighten them down hoping that the preload is proper when the threads bottom out.
