Remington, IN | My experience:
I had a '97 8100 for about 3800 hours- 7.6 engine. Loved the tractor with the exception of the transmission. Extremely rough shifts between 6-7 & 12-13. Multiple attempts to fix/many calibrations/different controller/etc. Never could get it smoothed out. Transmission shifting on mine was just terrible and no one seemed to be able to improve it. I did have an under cab hyd hose blow on it, though but at those hours I can't complain about that.
I still have a MX240 with about 6500 hours on it. Have had multiple under cab hyd hose issues & a couple CAPS pumps put on it (CIH paid for one of them). It also has climate control issues that are pretty typical with this series (and later). The MX200 would NOT have a CAPS pump, so that wouldn't be an issue.
I have 2 Gen 3 Magnums, a 2006 MX215 with around 4800 hours & 2007 275 Magnum with ~3600 hours. These have both been very solid tractors & all Gen3 Magnums use common rail system (no CAPS pumps).
I would not purchase an early (pre 98?) JD8100 or Gen 1 or 2 Magnum. I would not hesitate to get a later 8000 or Gen 3 Magnum. I know those options are really not comparable years wise (JD8000 vs Gen3 Magnum), but that's where I would be. With the Magnums typically bringing less $$ apples to apples with the 8000's you could probably get a Gen3 Magnum for about the same as a comparable (size wise) later model JD8000.
If I could pick between a late 8000 or Gen3 Magnum (215-245-275-305-335) I would definitely pick the Gen3 Magnum. My experience is that they finally got all the issues out of the Magnums by Gen3 & they are nice solid tractors. Also hard to go wrong with a later JD 8100+ but they may not be in your price range. The Gen 3 Magnums bring a lot for the $ in my opinion.
Like any large piece in my opinion, it has as much or more to do with if you have a local dealer that can support you well. Our CIH dealer is 4 miles away and we have a JD dealer about 15 miles away. Both good dealers.
Edited to correct the years of the 215/275
