Stay away from a Cat?  hahahahahah.  That is is why NAT is the last place I would ask a general question like what semi to buy???  Get so many different answers on the opposite sides.  For the record we have a 3406B in an 89' KW T600.  Has over a million miles on it and it's never been overhauled.  Can't say that about any cummins engines we've ever owned.  Plus it starts better too.  Big Cams are a step down and yes we own one of those too.

In my experience, 3406B to 855, both at 350, the only thing I noticed was that you shifted less in the Caterpillar and had to plan your stopping as the engine brake on it was apparently from Detroit as it made a lot of noise and did nothing in comparison to the 855.

So, I don't really see a reason why to pay the Caterpillar tax when both are million mile engines, plus the 855 is literally everywhere in everything, plus its descendent is still being made today and is still an option in some trucks, even though it is special order, unlike Caterpillar's.
