I built a headgate with wood and put the tank 100 gallon tank endwise outside of the pen. Put the heater and attached it on the opposite of the tank where they cannot reach it. It has worked good for over 20 years for me with no problem. I keep up to 12 steers up to market size at a time in the pen and have no problems even though only one at a time can drink.
