Does your monitor have VGA or DVI input terminal? VGA is 15 pin and usually blue in color. DVI pin count varies depending on the type, and DVI is a newer interface than VGA.
If your desktop is HDMI out only, 'conversion' cables for HDMI to DVI are common and work fine.
HDMI source to VGA display also exists, I would expect they work okay but I have not tried. This is converting a digital signal to analog so who knows about quality and longevity?
