In my experience dimensional lumber is just pine (soft wood) and doesn't last long with adult cattle pushing on it. If you can find some rough cut hard wood it would probably outlast steel. I've been using lots of ash boards lately and I'm confident it will be here long after I'm gone.


White Oak will resist rot the best, Red Oak, Ash, Elm ae all strong but not as rot resistant if organic matter is piled against them, but if there is a roof over it and you already have 18" of height you should get decent service out of all of them.
