Subject: RE: Trimble/Tru Count row clutch operating torque

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
The clutch mechanism in the Tru-Count clutch is what I think of as a spring wind up style. That is the driving end turns a spring which surrounds the driven shaft. As the driving end turns, the spring tends to wind up on the driven shaft This causes the diameter of the spring to decrease until the spring grabs the driven shaft and turns it.

When the air cylinder is extended to stop planting, it moves to a position that holds the end of the spring so that it does not wind up on the driven shaft. Thus the driven shaft no longer turns.

However, if the load is excessive, the spring might slip or other parts might break.

There is definitely a limit to the amount of torque that can be delivered. However, I do not know what that is. I assume you are considering using some Tru-Count clutches for an application other than turning a planting unit.

This could work out well assuming the load is acceptable. An air source would be needed along with some air valves. The Tru-Count air valve boxes could be used and controlled by using a 12VDC switch box. I actually have one that I no longer need. Completing the circuit by turning a switch ON would cause the air valve to open which would disengage a clutch.

Depending on the situation, there may be other approaches other than using a Tru-Count clutch which might work better. What do you have in mind?

In summary, I really didn't answer your question. The finger pickup style of meter that Deere uses does turn fairly hard and Tru-Counts can be used with them. This may not be sufficient for your situation.
