Northeastern Pa | Here hay is grown on ground that can’t grow grain. Namely shallow soils and deer pressure. Take it from someone that grows 400 acres of grass hay and 400 acres of straw. All in small bales. Don’t even consider it. Good equipment will kill you. A new baler 40,000. Rake30,000 Tedder 30,000 cutter 40,000 and a new balewagon is 275,000 now. If I was not so stubborn and we had less deer , I would not grow any. For the work involved it will NEVER compete with 225 bushel corn. Maybe alfalfa will but it takes a lifetime of experience, as well as a lifetime to build up the right customers | |
