The list of substitutes should include fish, peanut butter and even beans with rice. That said, there is a substantial price per unit of product difference within the beef meat case. This allows a measure of price substitution and still consume beef. These things have been available all my life and longer. Folks find themselves in economicly tough times and learn to adjust.

I've read articles from folks that study this stuff. Almost all recent articles over the last 10-12 years have been predicting reduced beef demand in coming days due to perceived historically high beef prices. Some recent articles addressing beef demand are pointing to growing consumer debt levels as the last straw that brakes consumer demand for product.

An equally common human behavior is a desire for dietary variety. The amount of demand attributed to each behavior is hard to measure with any degree of accuracy because taste enters the picture as well as humans are notoriously difficult to control research subjects.

Some people recognize the seemingly inevitable increase prevalence of type 2 diabetes. And thanks to folks like John Burns sharing his personal story backed by learned researchers sharing articles explaining human biology and biochemistry are explaining how animal fat may not be the singular 'boogie-man' ingredient in our diet. Fat and protein have a positive role to play in human dietary mix towards human health.

In my opinion, this is a significantly positive factor that has given folks the ok to eat animal protein. So coming back to the original comparison, "Beef. It's What's For Dinner".

It is the taste that wins the day when compared to chicken and pork.
