Tuscarora, MD | Should be 75 hp. This series of ut's was basically over-engineered in the hydraulic/ rockshaft and transmission department and couldn't compete with MF and Ford on gov't bids. That is why deere went to the open center and straight cut gears (collar shift) on the 5000 series (produce a cheaper tractor). Also it rumored that deere did not make enough profit on the 55's. I was a deere mechanic when the 5000 series was introduced and we all thought they would be a joke compared to the 55 series. Turns out that initially we we're right, but deere made some significant changes to the 5000's and they have something pretty solid now. As far as the 55's, I would say you can't go wrong. They are priced higher than comp's on resale. If you can justify it, do it. The weak point would be the dry clutch and ocassionally a hi/lo pack problem. Most of the hi/lo and reverser problems were because operators ran the trans way low on oil or clogged filters. Also operators would forget that you need to release the hand parking brake before driving. You can't fix stupid. Strong points are engine(very smooth), hyd, trans, rockshaft, and comfort. Very easy to split and work on. | |
