you can do that, with a pigtail adapter to the trailer plug.

stop and turn wire goes through the turn signal switch on semis, Signalstat is main most name on the switch. also works with the front turn lights as well if the particular Signalstat is designed for that. Some wire their semi trailers to have two 4 inch lights on each side, inside two come on bright with the brake valve only and is noted as the red wire in the harness, can also go to a single stop light on older trailers in the center by the three light DOT bar. The outside two 4 inch lights signal as the rear lights of a passenger vehicle would. yellow is for left turn light, brown is for right turn, again red for stop only.

us old guys remember by the ll in yellow for left and r in brown for right. never fails!
