Subject: Re: 7240 Magnum shifting

We had a '96 7240 mfd & it shifted easy compared to some of the earlier Magnums we had. Sounds like the other posters have covered you shifting & hitch problems so will leave it at that and go on to the turning radius.

First, are you running 30" rows or just working ground. We ran our 7240 mfd on both and what we did was turn the concave of the wheels in for row crop work. Sounds like this is where your's are set & it does sacrifice turning radius. Couple things you can do to help is down on the top of the axle there should be a lateral stop on each side, we added ( actually the dealer added it before they delivered the tractor)a second stop which prevented the axle from coming up as high allowing us to be able to move the turning stops in, either 1/2 hole or a full hole, can't remember. Also, find a front weight bracket for an 89 series tractor & put it on your 7240. These brackets move the weights out farther & are teardropped to allow the fron tires to turn in farther to the front & will let you gain a little shorter turning radius. Not sure what size equipment you are running but we ran 12 row equipment at the time and had no trouble turning on ends.

For working ground we flip / flopped the front wheels. Sounds likea lot of work but wasn't really that bad. One guy could easily do it in less than 10 minutes using an air impact. This settup will put the front wheel tracks between the dual tracks but we felt the shorter turning radius we gained was worth it.
