I do a lot of retro-fit and service work on a/c systems on the farm and at the dealership where i work and never add oil unless a component is replaced. When doing a retro- fit we add the required type and amount to a system along with leak dye.
Unless you had a line blow out or replaced a component, i would not add oil. Adding dye would be an excellent idea as if you have a leak, it will be a whole lot easier to find.
