I would go with what is the most convenient for you to get. I like freeze 12 but still put 134a in as well, depends on what the customer wants. Freeze 12 is a type of hydrocarbon but its flash point is ridiculously high, its not going to spontaneously combust in your a/c system. When you do any type of work and you system in empty always put a reciever dryer in. Also make sure you vacuum the system down to remove all moisture and air as both are a severe problem in the a/c system. Water and refrigerant create hydrochloric acid. When you get the new compressor just use PAG oil, it will be compatible with any refrigerant you use besides R12. I have heard of people just putting propane in their systems and having it work, but I am not that gutsy.
