If you see caked on oily dirt in the compressor shaft seal area or on any hose fittings or the evaporator/condenser, you have lost at least some oil.

I like to use POE (Ester 100) refrigerant oil in a converted system,as Ester oil will mix with any remaining mineral oil.
Pag oil is only good on an original R134a system. or a very carefully flushed converted R12 system,as any mineral oil in the system will cause problems.. Not worth the risk to me, I have had 0 compressor problems using Ester oil with R134a
