Yeah, the Thinkpads are pretty bulletproof - good choice! It doesn't surprise me that the in-stock laptops didn't have integrated serial ports; they're mostly special-order now...
You might be able to get a good used (or new) battery for your Thinkpad for a reasonable price on eBay.
