I don't know about your harvest conditions, but in ours the cart would never keep up if he stopped to fold the auger in and out every time ( hence, we leave it in the locked out position). Even the best combine operator is going to be distracted about something in his 40+ year career and run the auger into something if he leaves it out. I think it is better for the cart guy to always be aware of where his auger is and for the combine guy to never have to worry where his is because it is always folded in after dumping. If we are on small, tree lined fields, we will keep the auger on the grain cart folded also, but the demand for the grain cart is a lot less on small fields also. I think a lot of these differences in opinions have to do with differences in harvest conditions. Running one combine in small irregular fields is a lot different than running multiple combines in large open fields.
