Subject: RE: Corn silage pricing

Perry County, 35 miles NW of Harrisburg, PA
Lucas,

Around my area, the multiplier seems to be 6 times the price of shelled corn.

Local price of $4.00/bu X 6 = $24/ton X 10/acre = $240/acre.

This compares with 50 bu/acre X $4/bu = $200/acre.

Now for comparison, a "corn silage dealer" from Cumberland County, last winter, was selling fermented corn silage for $31/ton plus $6/ton delivery. This would have made the corn silage worth $31/ton - $3/ton harvest cost = $28/ton. Word has it that this dealer grows corn that will give the most tons/acre, not necessarily the highest quality silage, especially for dairy cows.

In theory, you should be making more gross $/acre from corn silage because you are selling a lot more nutrients than in shelled corn. Trying to convince your buyer of this is the hard part.

Hope this helps.

Dave
