Dalton, OH | Wow, you are only getting $23/ton for haylage? Do you have any harvesting cost involved or do they take care of it all? I sell around 1500 tons of 1st cutting to a local dairy. The price is based on moisture and RFV, but we usually shoot for 150 RFV and 65% mositure which is close to $50/ton, delivered to his bunk. Figures out to around $35/ton withou the harvesting depending on the hauling distance. I'm not saying you should raise your price, just make sure you are making out on your end. Dairies will pay for good quality stuff and I would think the same would be true on corn silage. A few years back when we had a drought, the corn silage was actually higher quality. Even though it only had nubbin ears on it the ratio of grain to stalk was higher and it tested much better then regular corn silage. I would hold my own on pricing because corn silage is still the cheapest way to feed a dairy animal with feed prices and hay prices where they are at.
